Biography

Isabella (Chilton) Chandler is a daughter of Mayflower passenger James Chilton. Her sister, Mary (Chilton) Winslow was also a passenger on the Mayflower. Mary is famous for her historic leap making her the first to land on Plymouth Rock.[1]

Isabella Chilton was born in 1587 in England. She was Christened on 15 Jan 1586/7 at St. Paul Parish, Canterbury, Kent, England[2][3]

Marriage: 21 Jul 1615, Place: Canterbury, Kent, , England to Roger Chandler . The Chandlers had one son and four daughters.
Death: BET 1658 AND 3 October 1665, Duxbury, Massachusetts

Research Notes

  • For Isabella's nine siblings, see 'Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Vol. II' (Plymoutth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1978), pp. 5ff.
  • Anderson's "The Mayflower Migration" indicates (on page 60) that Isabel was was betrothed in Leiden to Roger Wilson on 22 May 1615. In reality she married Roger Chandler on 21 July 1615. Roger Wilson was one of the witnesses to the marriage.
  • Date of death is between 1646 and 1665. Sources needed to explain this date range.

DNA

mtDNA Results T2b+16288C[4]

Three matrilineal (all female line) descendants of Mary (Chilton) Winslow have taken a full mtDNA test and have their results posted in various Family Tree DNA Projects such as the Mayflower DNA Project.[5][6] The three identified descendants descend from two different daughters [Mary (Winslow) Gray and Susanna (Winslow) Latham]. While it is not known whether any of these individuals have joined the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD), the fact they are exact mtDNA matches from two different daughters of Mary Chilton (wife of John Winslow) does provide an adequate level of "proof."[7]

The Haplogroup assigned to the full mtDNA results is T2b, but all three results include an additional HVR1 mutation at: 16288C.[8]

  6. In addition, there are a total of five individuals who are exact full mtDNA matches
  7. Due to the rare nature of the T2b+16288C haplogroup
  8. It is hoped this additional mutation would form a new subclade of T2b at some time in the future.

Isabell (Chilton) Chandler (bef.1587-aft.1646) | WikiTree FREE Family Tree (13) Stephen Newstrum

The Mayflower Society uses "Isabel" as her first name and the christening record attached lists her name as "Isabell". I suggest we use "Isabel" instead of "Isabella" as her first name.

Thanks, Stephen. We generally use the spelling as found in the birth or baptismal record (see: Help: Name Fields - Spelling conventions), and if source #2 is an accurate transcription of the original, I'd go with "Isabell." If anyone has access to source #3 (hopefully it's the original parish register) and finds something different there, please advise.

I'll make the change to Isabell, pending any difference in the original register.

Do you have another source for this profile? The Find A Grave ID leads to a memorial for Florence May Evans Child (1870–1912), who is clearly a different person. FindAGrave profiles without gravestone photos aren't considered reliable sources, and since this is a pre-1700 profile, it should have at least one reliable source.

Isabella is a member of a Mayflower Family. For the most part, the Mayflower Families were Separatists, with different beliefs from the Puritans.

The PGM template is probably not appropriate for her.
