Controversy has erupted over the cause of death of rock singer Shin Hae-chul, who was declared dead Monday after falling into a coma after a heart attack.
Some of his acquaintances claim medical negligence on the part of the hospital was to blame, which the hospital outright denies.
Shin Dae-chul of rock band Sinawe and a close friend of the late Shin Hae-chul, accused the Seoul hospital in question of failing to properly perform an operation on Oct. 17 to treat intestinal adhesions and contraction.
"I can't believe that you left, Hae-chul. But I will take vengeance on your behalf," the Sinawe member wrote on his Facebook, indicating that initial treatment was not properly conducted.
Rumors about medical malpractice started swirling after Shin was transferred to Asan Medical Center on Oct. 22 after having a heart attack; this was five days after his initial operation at the Seoul-based hospital.
The hospital in Seoul made an announcement on Oct. 24 that it would take legal action against the sources of the rumors.
A comment from the hospital later that day further angered Shin's family, friends and fans - "There is possibility that Shin took our medical advice lightly because he was a celebrity."
KCA Entertainment, Shin's agency, responded on their client's behalf on Oct. 25. "The comment is very unpleasant, not only for us but also for his family."
Kim Chang-ryul, a member of pop group DJ DOC, also criticized the hospital on his Instagram, saying, "This is not right. You bring him back!"
The homepage of the hospital crashed days ago because it had too many visitors.
Yet the hospital in question has not released a formal announcement, rejecting all media contact.
No legal action has been taken, and there is no investigation into the case so far.
After his surgery on Oct. 17, Shin Hae-chul was released the next day.
He was hospitalized again due to chest pains on Oct. 20, but after getting emergency treatment and check-ups was released again.
The pain persisted, which led him back to hospital on Oct. 22.
He then suffered a massive heart attack at around noon that day, prompting the medical staff to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.
He was later moved to the Asan Medical Center. His agency said he had a serious infection of the peritoneum, or abdominal cavity lining, and intestines.
He reportedly had a stomach operation at Seoul Sky Hospital as part of a diet plan in 2009.
Shin was one of the biggest names in Korean pop music in the 1990s. His fans have responded to news of his death with an outpouring of love.
"He was an artist who appealed to the public," music critic Lim Jin-mo said. "We didn't just lose one musician. We lost a messenger of the music industry."

가수 신해철이 갑작스럽게 세상을 떠난 다음 날인 28일에는 라디오 주파수를 어디로 맞춰도 고인을 추모하는 방송이 흘러나왔다.
지상파 3사 라디오 프로그램들은 이날 라디오 DJ로도 왕성하게 활동했던 고인을 애도하는 특집 방송을 편성했다. 선곡표는 '마왕'이 남긴 수많은 노래로 가득 찼고 시청자들의 신청곡과 사연이 줄을 이었다.
MBC FM4U '박경림의 두 시의 데이트'는 3부와 4부를 신해철 추모 방송 '그대에게 쓰는 편지'로 꾸몄다.
한층 가라앉은 목소리의 박경림은 가수 이한철, 음악 평론가 성우진과 함께 '안녕', '우리 앞의 생이 끝나갈 때' 등 신해철의 곡을 하나씩 틀었다.
이들은 고인의 음악 세계를 이야기하고 그와의 추억을 되새김질하다가도 복받치는 슬픔에 종종 말을 잇지 못했다.
이어지는 오후 4시 '오후의 발견, 김현철입니다'와 오후 6시 '배철수의 음악캠프'도 신해철 특집 방송을 내보냈다.
이날 라디오 방송에서는 'FM 음악도시 신해철입니다'나 '신해철의 고스트스테이션' 등에 남은 그의 생생한 육성도 시청자들에게 전해졌다.
MBC '신해철의 고스트스테이션' 홈페이지에는 '아직 당신을 보낼 수 없다'거나 '나의 영웅'이라면서 그를 그리워하는 사람들의 글들이 속속 올라오고 있다.
SBS도 오후 4시 파워FM '김창렬의 올드스쿨' 등에서 그를 애도하는 특집 방송을 내보냈다.
이날 오전 방송된 KBS '이현우의 음악앨범'도 신해철의 '슬픈 표정 하지 말아요'를 튼 데 이어 고인이 자신의 장례식장에서 울려 퍼지리라고 말했던 '민물장어의 꿈'으로 방송을 마무리했다.
신해철은 1989년 대학가요제 대상 수상 직후 MBC 라디오 '우리는 하이틴'을 통해 라디오 DJ로 첫발을 뗐다.
그는 이후 1991년 '밤의 디스크쇼 신해철입니다', 1996~1997년 'FM 음악도시 신해철입니다'를 진행했고 2001년부터 SBS와 MBC를 오가며 진행한 '신해철의 고스트네이션', '고스트 스테이션'으로 많은 사랑을 받았다.
신해철이 지난 2007년 4월 14일 EBS 음악 프로그램 '스페이스 공감'에 출연해 '아내에게 바치는 노래'를 부른 영상도 다시 주목받고 있다.(연합뉴스)
